Andrea S. Freire
Professor and principal investigator
PhD in Biological Oceanography/USP
I have been working with crustaceans since I was an undergraduate student at UERJ. For the last 20 years, my work has been focused on marine microbiome (plankton) and crabs of rocky shore and reef ecosystems. I work with pleasure in multidisciplinary and inclusive teams that are attentive to sustainability and socio-environmental justice. I was involved in many oceanographic expeditions in the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific and Antarctica and I have been conducting research in oceanic islands and conservation units off the Brazilian coast, guiding young marine scientists in research, education and development of Ocean Literacy. I live in Florianópolis, surrounded by the sea, where I swim in open waters, travel by bicycle and practice yoga with great dedication.

Andrea Green Koettker
Researcher and project coordinator
Biologist from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) and PhD in Biological Oceanography from the University of São Paulo (USP). I have experience in the field of marine biology, with an emphasis on zooplankton and oceanographic processes, identification of Brachyura crab larvae and ecology of decapod crustacean larvae. I have been participating in several scientific expeditions, including as Chief of Research on the French Sailboat Tara, from the Tara Ocean Foundation. Currently, I am working in research projects focused on Marine Biology and as a coordinator of environmental education and Ocean Literacy popularization actions associated with the PlancZEu, AtlantECO (H2020 Blue Growth) and Veleiro ECO projects.
Graduate
Erica Becker
Marine biologist and PhD student in Ecology at UFSC. Curious about the infinity of life present in a drop of sea water, I am eager to understand how plankton are related to the functioning of the ecosystem. Specialist in marine zooplankton, with an emphasis on copepods. In love with my son – Miguel! – and the whole universe around the empowerment of scientist mothers. I love to be involved in biodiversity conservation projects and to combine art, science and environmental education.
Thais Peixoto Macedo
Biologist and Master in Ecology from UFSC. Collaborator researcher of the PELD-ILOC project. I have been working on monitoring programs of reef ecosystems, with an emphasis on decapod crustaceans. My masters thesis focused on the effects of ocean temperature anomalies on the population dynamics of the Sally lightfoot crab in the Brazilian oceanic islands. I am motivated by challenges and I love fieldwork. Divemaster, photographer and creator of this site.
Isis Ferreira Batistela
Oceanographer and Master's Student in Ecology at UFSC. As an undergraduate student, my work was focused on the zooplankton community of Trindade Island and I was awarded with a scholarship from the Veleiro ECO project. Currently, I am investigating the trophic network of the plankton community at the REBIO Arvoredo and I working with research, education and outreach for the AtlantECO project. I am also a divemaster and travel enthusiast.
Undergraduate
Vanessa Silva Martins
Biological Sciences student at UFSC. I am working with sexual maturity of the Sally lighfoot crab Grapsus grapsus from Trindade Island. I am also a stand up paddle instructor and training to become a scuba diver.
Fernando Gonçalves
Biological Sciences student at UFSC. Developing research in the field of ecology with emphasis on size structure of the mesozooplankton from the REBIO Arvoredo. I have an interest in artisanal beers and surfing.
Mariana Silva Correa
Biological Sciences student at UFSC and a fellow member of the Tutorial Education Program (PET Biology), where I work with environmental education in the 'Brotar' project and other research and outreach activities. My research focus on the marine and coastal zooplankton of the REBIO Arvoredo. I love to swim, my pets and I often listen to music from past decades.
Gabriela Rodrigues Silveira
Oceanography student at UFSC and granted with a Scientific Initiation Scholarship (PIBIC). My research project integrates data from the bacterio, phyto and zooplankton communities of the shallow continental shelf of Santa Catarina. I was also an assistant in the Zooplankton course for two semesters. I am interested in long car trips and confectionery.
